REFLECTION
During the past year we have all faced more than normal adversity due to the global pandemic. Resilience is very present in our lives right now if we are aware of it or not. So truly understanding resilience is an important skill for us to have in order to live life easier. While learning about resilience we had to find out what type of resilience resonated with us the most and how/if we could apply it to our lives. I was most drawn to personal/psychological resilience and social/societal resilience. For the end project we were supposed to make something that describes, shows, depicts, is, or means resilience to us to fit inside a zeen.
Over all of January and the first half of February we look at 4 different resilience lenses. They are Personal/psychological, ecological, local, and social/societal resilience. With each of these we learned a new aspect of resilience. For personal/psychological resilience we examined how our brains can adapt to being resilient and that we can train them to become more resilient. Next, social/societal resilience focused on Viktor Frankl's “Man’s Search For Meaning” and how they survived the German concentration camps. They had a whole community of resilient survivors trying to make it to freedom. Third, we interviewed a community member to understand local resilience. We asked them about a time they faced adversity and how they overcame it. What types of tools and people helped them through the tough time, then how the community was affected. Last, ecological resilience was represented in a journal article called “Ecological Resilience- In Theory and Application” by Lance Gunderson. It explained how the environment is resilient as well when things like natural disasters happen. Nature bounces back after a time of crisis just like humans can. Each different type of resilience has an important part in our world.
To be honest I had a difficult time creating my project because I had no motivation or care to. When we first started project work time I was going to write an essay talking about how generation z’s mental health is tremendously worse than other generations, what contributing factors there are, how they cope, and how covid affected it, personal/psychological resilience. I sat down many, many times and tried to write said essay but I was unable and uninspired; so I had to switch gears. I wanted to do something more artistic and powerful. I decided to make a digital collage showing ways generation z has been resilient and taken action on the injustice in our world, social/societal resilience. Unfortunately I still didn't want to do it. Then, as the deadline came closer and closer I got more need to finish the project because it was due. I ended up finishing it the night before it was due and not hating it.
Throughout the project I feel like my eyes have been opened to how much resilience surrounds us and that's how I have grown. I had no idea how resilience makes us strong, it protects our psyche, that we can train ourselves to be more resilient, if we want to. This has made me want to become more resilient. When we were learning about personal/psychological resilience it said having something positive to look forward to helps us keep perspective and get through whatever time we are facing. This, along with other techniques, have helped me be more resilient in my day to day life. Trying to have a positive outlook on life and the future helps me hang in there until life is bearable again. I also feel like I have gone backwards as a person. Before this project I was very good at doing my assignment on or even ahead of time at a high quality. But now, I can feel my motivation and joy for learning becoming less and less. Although I am trying to be resilient and do my work in a less procrastinating pace.
